What is a root canal?
Root canal treatment removes the diseased inner pulp tissue of a tooth in order to stop painful inflammation and prevent a dental abscess. Without endodontic treatment, diseased teeth would need to be extracted. Root canal treatment stop the disease process and prevents infection so that the tooth can continue to provide function throughout life.

Most root canal treatments are done with local anesthetics just as would be provided at your dentist’s office for a filling or crown. A rubber dam is placed around the tooth that acts as a surgical barrier to prevent saliva from contaminating the root canal with bacteria and to prevent disinfecting solutions from contact with the mouth. A small opening is made on the chewing surface of the tooth or crown to gain access to the root canal spaces. Small instruments are navigated to the tips of the roots and then used to enlarge, disinfect, and clean the roots. Once the roots are clean inside, they are filled with a rubber material that will stay permanently inside the roots to prevent recontamination.
Once the root canal is treated, the tooth needs to be restored by your general dentist. Sometimes this restoration is filling, and sometimes it is a crown (porcelain cap).
What happens after treatment?
When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of completion at our office. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.
How much will a root canal cost?
The cost associated with root canals can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth.

I was prepared to return to our winter home in FL when I had a troublesome tooth. I went to our local dentist in Monticello, he determined I needed a root canal and referred me to Great River. This was my first experience with a root canal, and I am soooo very DDS phobic! I was overwhelmed by the amazing care and compassion and reassurance by Dr. Saylor and staff. Although my heart was beating out of my chest, I had no need for fear or pain. Should I ever have a need for another root canal, I will fly up to MN (even in the depth of winter) to have Dr. Saylor treat me. Saving the tooth was questionable, but I decided to proceed. I recently had my 6-mo DDS check with my family dentist, plus x-rays. All looks great with the root canal! Thank you Dr. Saylor and your assistant for allowing me to keep my tooth!

I just wrote a review on Google Reviews. And I am compelled to leave one here as well. Dr. Papworth and "Katelyn" were amazing! I am just now home from my procedure. My amazing dentist in Baxter, MN referred me to Great River Endodontics for my root canal, because it was an intricate location beyond the crown on the tooth. I must say that walking dogs, hanging out with family & friends might be your choice for how to spend a day rather than this procedure. But if you HAD to have this procedure, let me share that this IS the place! I was treated with kindness from the moment I walked in, by the professional staff at the desk. And Dr. Papworth and Katelyn were kind, fun, funny (!), competent, and compassionate. They invited any and all questions that I had, clearly explained the procedure, made sure that I was comfortable throughout, and completed this delicate and intricate procedure with a level of confidence and professionalism that is top-shelf. I honestly had fun(!) I know, I know...it sounds like I'm lying. But for a root canal that is pain free, with such capable and wonderful people ~ I drove back home with a profound sense of gratitude and joy. I highly recommend this firm! And I'm certain that all of the staff are equally amazing. But I will be requesting these two if I need this procedure in the future!
